It's Fall Y'all
Fall is my favorite season!
The weather gets a little cooler, the leaves begin to change and we set the clocks back an hour. Fall decor is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the cozy vibes of this time of year. Whether you’re a seasoned decorator or a beginner looking for inspiration, I will guide you through some creative and budget-friendly fall decor ideas to make your home a welcoming haven for the autumn season.
Here’s my interior fall decor and some steps to get your home decorated for the season:
Warm Color Palette
The foundation of fall decor lies in warm and earthy colors. Think of shades like deep oranges, rich reds, rustic browns, and golden yellows. These hues evoke the feeling of falling leaves and harvest season, instantly transforming your space into a cozy retreat. You can incorporate these colors into your decor through throw pillows, blankets, table linens, garlands, and even wall art. I know that in the past few years, the colors for decorating have changed. They have incorporated some of the sage green color and the dark blue has become a trend. I’m loving all of them and I like to change it up from time to time, but this year I stuck to my traditional oranges and browns with a few whites and greens thrown in. Choose the palette you love and go with it. There is no wrong answer.
Pumpkins Galore
Nothing says fall like pumpkins! These versatile gourds can be used in countless ways to enhance your fall decor. Whether you opt for real pumpkins or faux ones, they can be placed on your porch, used as table centerpieces, or even painted in various colors and designs to match your decor theme. Mini pumpkins and gourds make excellent additions to mantels and shelves. Some I purchased with fun prints like the black and white buffalo check I placed on my front porch which you will see in another post, and others I painted myself, like the polka dots and the P both sitting on my hearth. If you love to craft like me, this might be an option, otherwise, wait for the sales and purchase the ones you love.
Cozy Textiles
Fall is all about getting snug and cozy. Swap out lightweight summer linens for heavier, warmer textiles. Plush blankets and soft, textured throws can be draped over your sofas and chairs to add warmth and comfort to your living space. Consider adding a few plaid or flannel pillows for that extra touch of coziness. If you are like me and don’t want to have to store a ton of pillows, buy the pillow covers instead. They sell all kinds of fun printed pillow covers for each season. This is a fun way to give your room a whole new look very inexpensively. If you go this route, pro tip: Purchase a larger pillow than the cover calls for so that you end up with a nice fluffy pillow. (18×18 cover goes on 20×20 pillow).
Natural Elements
Bringing the outdoors in is a key aspect of fall decor. Incorporate natural elements such as branches, acorns, pinecones, and dried leaves into your decor. You can create a beautiful autumnal centerpiece using a wooden tray or a glass vase filled with these natural items. These elements not only add a touch of nature but also lend a rustic charm to your space. I used some branches in some of my vases and I used some dried leaves on my tables. I intermix the real with the silk.
Candles and Candleholders
Candles instantly set a cozy and inviting ambiance. Opt for scents like cinnamon, apple, or pumpkin spice to infuse your home with the delightful aroma of fall. Place them in decorative candleholders or lanterns to add an elegant touch to your decor. Cluster candles of varying heights for a visually appealing display. I use the real scented candles sporadically throughout the home and I use timer candles in my lanterns and décor pieces. I love timer candles! You turn them on once and they continue to come on at the same time every night and go off by themselves. They are a tad pricier than any other battery-operated candle but oh so worth it. They add such a beautiful ambiance and you don’t have to do anything except change the batteries when they finally give out!
Wreaths and Garlands
Inside your home, consider using garlands made of fall foliage to drape over door frames, mantels, or staircases. These greenery accents add a natural, earthy feel to your decor. I use garlands to fill in spaces on tables throughout, they are a great way to add color without having to add a lot of décor. I also love to add wreaths to mirrors or other wall hangings. A wreath can add so much warmth to a space and they don’t always have to hang outdoors.
Seasonal Table Settings
When entertaining during the fall, pay attention to your table settings. Layer your table with autumn-themed tablecloths, placemats, and napkins. Consider using rustic dishes and metallic flatware for an elegant touch. Add a centerpiece of fresh or faux flowers in fall colors to complete the look. I generally decorate the center of my table only so we can sit and use the table daily. I will decorate with individual place settings for our Thanksgiving dinner, so stay tuned for that as we get closer to the holiday.
DIY Projects
Get creative with DIY fall decor projects. You can make your own wreaths, create hand-painted signs with fall quotes, or craft your unique candleholders. DIY projects not only add a personal touch to your decor but can also be a fun activity for the whole family. I have handcrafted many of my décor pieces and am currently creating some table chargers of my own to use this year!
Fall decor is all about embracing the warmth and charm of the season. By incorporating warm colors, natural elements, cozy textiles, and seasonal accents, you can transform your home into a cozy haven for the autumn months. Whether you prefer a rustic, farmhouse look or a more modern and minimalist style, there are endless possibilities to create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of fall. So, gather your decor essentials, get creative, and let the spirit of autumn infuse your home with its cozy charm. Happy decorating!
